Hiking Sliabh Liag (“Sleeve League”) October 4, 2022irelandroderick I was pleased that our hotel has Muesli. The last few have only had things like cornflakes. Note Weetabix at 11 o’clock. The thatched roof cottage where we saw a weaving demonstration. It was overcast and slightly rainy, which is the forecast for the rest of our trip. Ireland has no lack of water. The Sissy Spacek-looking woman is Cyndi, who does the weaving, and most of the talking. Weaving was traditionally men’s work, so she was unusual at the time she picked it up. Her father did it before, but as drudge income, not art. In the background is her sister Sharon, who does the sewing. Picture from Jerry Wang. Cyndi Graham explaining the sod roof, which her husband stabilized by spraying on a glue solution. Tea and scones at Killibegs by the harbor. They keep feeding us. Local fisherman Neely. He did various jobs both on ship and shore, but the latter part of his career was as an engineer. Many of the smaller ships had no one with such training, so they would fish for 3 days until something broke, then go back to port for repairs. The back of some fishing vessels, showing the nets. These are probably smaller than the big ships Neely worked on. He reported taking 1500 TONS of mackerel once in a single haul. We had lunch at the Rusty Mackerel. My Seafood Crumble was like Seafood ala King, with a crumb casserole topping. Not bad, especially with the lemon squeezed on it. Diana and Paula were less enthusiastic about their vegetarian linguini. Looking down into the bay at Sliabh Liag (pronounced “Sleeve League). These are supposed to be the highest sea cliffs in all of Europe. A Rook, with a body the size of a chicken. Brian said that these are called Craigh Rheasha. This is the trail up. There was a parking time limit of 20 minutes, so those that hiked probably had to turn around before reaching the top, which is an access to a much longer track similar to the Appalachian Trail. Lots of sheep pellets. I now understand why there are places like The Rusty Castle Pub and The Rusty Mackerel in this area. With all the precipitation, everything rusts. This lock is from Valentine’s Day, this year. Sheep roamed about freely in the parking lot at Sliabh Liag. Dinner was on our own, so we picked up food from Aldi. No, we didn’t get the black and white pudding, this picture is just for our nephew to compare to Aldi in Virginia. Our dinner was a big salad, a wrap, a sandwich, and some berries. We have enough digestive biscuits for now, but this was such a bargain, I had to take a picture. UPDATE, 28-OCT-2022: Here is the price at a local store in California. I don’t know whether it’s exactly the same brand, but the price is 10x. (Visited 36 times, 1 visits today)
