This project is a dream I’ve had for some time.  It unites three major interests of mine: bicycle touring, solar energy, and switching power supplies.

Ever since we installed solar panels on our roof in 2006, I’ve fantasized about a solar powered bicycle.  I’ve seen the competition-level solar vehicles, which often have the rider lying down in an awkward position.  I’ve also seen the type of solar bicycle with a small panel on a rear rack.  Those might more accurately be called as solar charged bicycles, as the panels would seem too small to sustain motion on their own, even in bright sunlight.

What I want to do is tow a serious solar panel behind a bicycle, a panel large enough to be the sole source of power in bright sunlight.
