When I got it home, I discovered that it was also missing the hard disk (no surprise), and therefore, the operating system. However, all 4 GB of RAM was still in it. As a test, I put a hard disk in it, and ran Ubuntu Linux. Seemed to be fine. All right, let&#8217;s try for Windows.<\/p>\n<p>I downloaded the Windows 10 install media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/software-download\/windows10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2670\" style=\"width: 592px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2670\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Win10Download.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"970\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Win10Download.png 592w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Win10Download-61x100.png 61w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Win10Download-183x300.png 183w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Because I was browsing from a non-Windows OS, I was redirected to a page that could only download the ISO file. No problem.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2678\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2678\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IsoSize.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"538\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IsoSize.png 538w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IsoSize-100x30.png 100w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IsoSize-300x91.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 64-bit version is more than 5 GB, and will not fit on a 4.7 GB DVD+R.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Had I wanted the 32-bit version, I could have simply burned a DVD and installed from there. But the 64-bit version was more than would fit on a standard DVD+R. One solution would have been to use higher-capacity dual-layer or Blu-Ray DVDs (if I had any on hand), but there was a better solution.<\/p>\n<p>Most computers today will boot to a USB stick. In fact, if you use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/software-download\/windows10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">download link<\/a>\u00a0 while running a Windows OS, you will get a utility that will create such a stick for you. I chose an alternate method of creating a bootable USB stick, the <a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rufus utility<\/a>. Ignore my next step unless you plan to use Rufus.<\/p>\n<p>With the default settings of Rufus 3.8, the USB stick created was invisible to the Acer AX1031. My guess is that the computer was one of the last of its generation that used BIOS, before EFI took over. The older BIOS was incapable of understanding the newer GPT disk partitioning scheme, so I had to force the older MBR (master boot record) scheme, as below.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2679\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rufus.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2679\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rufus.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rufus.png 960w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rufus-100x75.png 100w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rufus-300x225.png 300w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Rufus-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note that the partitioning scheme is set to MBR, not GPT.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I plugged the USB stick into the AX1031, and turned the power on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2681\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2681\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/F12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/F12.png 800w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/F12-100x72.png 100w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/F12-300x216.png 300w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/F12-768x552.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After the computer was turned on, I had to quickly press F12 many times to get into the boot menu. I copied it from the Certificate of Authenticity sticker.
