{"id":1680,"date":"2013-01-21T10:22:21","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T18:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/?p=1680"},"modified":"2017-10-16T14:14:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T22:14:19","slug":"run-ac-appliances-directly-off-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/blog\/run-ac-appliances-directly-off-dc\/","title":{"rendered":"Run AC Appliances Directly Off DC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people will tell you that you cannot plug an AC appliance into DC, and in general, that&#8217;s right. \u00a0But if you know what you&#8217;re doing, <em>you actually can run some AC equipment directly off DC<\/em>. \u00a0This is especially true for any computer or electronic equipment that says &#8220;100 &#8211; 250 VAC&#8221; on the back.\u00a0\u00a0And just for kicks, I tried putting a normal compact fluorescent bulb across the 200 VDC. I wasn&#8217;t sure whether it would overheat or blow up or something. No trouble, it worked fine. Didn&#8217;t even get very hot.<\/p>\n<h2>Why would someone want to do this?<\/h2>\n<p>No particular reason today, except maybe in a dire emergency, when the grid is going to be down for days or weeks, someone could jerry-rig this kind of arrangement to power their computers.<\/p>\n<p>But imagine a future where all\u00a0appliances are all designed to run off a wide range of high-voltage DC.\u00a0 People could put solar panels on their cabins, without the need for batteries or inverters, if they only wanted to run during the day.\u00a0 If cost-effective batteries were invented, they could be charged directly from a solar or wind array.\u00a0 And in using the energy, there would be no loss introduced by an inverter.\u00a0 Every house could be its own little generating plant, completely decentralizing electricity generation.\u00a0 And we wouldn&#8217;t worry about perturbations in the grid, which could also be DC,\u00a0because everyone&#8217;s house would be tolerant of a wide range of voltage.\u00a0 Each household could program automatically what price they would be willing to buy and sell at, disconnecting from the grid on demand if the price wasn&#8217;t right.\u00a0 I may not live to see this future, but I dare to dream that maybe my descendants will.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pbKhtmNd0Vs?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Tapping a Photovoltaic Array for High Voltage DC<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how I tapped into our solar array for the experiment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1686\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/blog\/run-ac-appliances-directly-off-dc\/before\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1686\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1686\" title=\"before\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/before.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/before.jpg 480w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/before-75x100.jpg 75w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/before-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the DC disconnect box of our solar system. 200 to 240 volts DC comes in at the top from the solar panels. This is an IEC C13 jack, of the type often found on computers. To the terminal that is usually AC hot, I have wired DC positive. To what is usually AC neutral, I have wired DC negative.
