There are two sealed bearings press-fitted into each side of the hub. The hole in the bearing is made to snugly accommodate the 1\/2&#8243; axle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By the way, the name of the trailer I salvaged was &#8220;Baby Jogger II-20 Alloy.&#8221;  It was severely overdesigned, with 36-spoke 20&#8243; wheels, and a 1\/2&#8243; steel axle.  Stronger than most bicycles.  The label said it was rated for 100 pounds, but I would not be surprised if it could bear triple that.<\/p>\n<p>If you look carefully at the picture above, you&#8217;ll see the bearing. The little ring in the middle spins freely, while the black part around it is fixed to the outer metal ring, which is press-fitted into the hub. In other words, nothing spins except the tiny, innermost ring.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought as to how to mount this wheel on the trailer involved putting a simple 1\/2&#8243; threaded rod through the middle, with nuts on either side. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t like the idea of the wheel possibly spinning on the threaded rod. \u00a0Also, if I tightened the nuts down to prevent spinning, the nuts would probably scrape on the outer ring of the bearing &#8211; not good. \u00a0I went to a bike shop to see what normally goes into the hole of the bearing. \u00a0It was a short axle that would actually be embedded inside the hub, before the bearings were pressed in. \u00a0If I wanted a similar solution, I would have to pay a machinist to make a part.<\/p>\n<p>I decided instead to buy some off-the-shelf hardware from Zorotools.com. \u00a0These were about $2 for a bag of 3.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-85\" alt=\"Flanged Sleeve Bearing\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-4.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-4.jpg 640w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-4-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-4-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s called a Flanged Sleeve Bearing, and is made by Bunting Bearings. It has an outer diameter of 1\/2&#8243;, and an inner diameter of 3\/8&#8243;. More importantly, it has a flange which will extend the height of the inner bearing outward by 1\/16&#8243;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My solution would be to put one of these sleeve bearings on each side of the wheel. Then, a 3\/8&#8243; threaded rod could go straight through as an axle. I could tighten down nuts on either side of the wheel, because the flange on the sleeve would provide just enough clearance to avoid scraping the outer ring of the sealed bearing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-86\" alt=\"Wheel-5\" src=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-5.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-5.jpg 640w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-5-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pididu.com\/wordpress\/solarbike\/files\/2013\/05\/Wheel-5-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>OH NO, IT DOESN&#8217;T FIT!<\/strong> My caliper showed the sleeve to be about 0.004 inch (4 mils) larger than the shaft that originally went in the hole.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The parts that I bought were sintered bronze, not super tight on tolerance. I wanted a snug fit, but not an interference fit. I didn&#8217;t have a lathe, and the thought of paying a machinist to take off 4 mils was distasteful.
