Baker City, OR

It got cold at Union Creek Campground overnight. The sun rose at 5 am, but it was still only 42 ℉ at 7:30 in the morning when we left.

Short ride into Baker from the campground.

We rolled into Baker on Wednesday morning. This was Merrianne’s destination, but she didn’t have to leave until Saturday. Well then, what could we do? We started with breakfast at the Blue and White Cafe. The most expensive thing on the menu was $3.00. Coffee was ten cents.

We got into Baker at 9 am, and met Jay, Peter, and Diane at the Blue and White Cafe, where they were having breakfast.

I’m not sure why we took this picture. Maybe it was to show where I refilled my cash. This must be relatively early in the morning – look at the temperature. Also, this was probably about the only time I pulled on my leg warmers.

First things first. We got a room at a motel, then picked up a box at a local bike shop. Then we rented a storage locker (a month’s storage was the cheapest way to go, even though we would only use the place for two days). In Baker, $30 bought a huge locker. It was big enough to store two cars in. We left the bikes there, then drove away in our rented car. We were fortunate to get the rental car in Baker. There were only two in town. Whew! Business out of the way, we rested.

The Trail Motel on 10th St. was where we got our small but clean room. Then we went to the Ford dealer to rent one of their two available cars. We got a bike box from the Schwinn shop on Main Street. Finally, we located the Greyhound Bus Terminal, and bought a one-way ticket to Portland for Saturday morning, which would connect to Merrianne’s flight home. We also arranged to have the motel room again on Friday. On Thursday, our plan was to drive ahead a bit and sight-see.

The storage unit we rented for $30. Space was not an issue in that area.
This was the car we rented, one of two available in Baker City. We found out later that this was the same car Debbie had rented to catch Brian.
Norm and Linda Devereux on their honeymoon.
This restaurant had put up Napkin Art that customers had left. I don’t remember whether it was the Blue and White Cafe, or somewhere else.
